Accident Town Trail

Short town fitness and walking trail around baseball diamond and horseshoe pits.  


Directions:  From Rt. 219 travel to downtown Accident.  Going North make right on South Street and proceed 200 yds.  Parking area and trail are on your right.  From North, make left on Accident-Bittinger Road and take first right on South Street at Post Office.  Parking area and trail are 300yds on your left.

Asa Durst Area

Description: There are 3 blazed trails, totaling 4.8 miles, that can be accessed from this trailhead. Old logging roads and single track trail pass through pine and hardwood forests as well as the historic Asa Durst Homestead.

Use: Back-country camping, Hiking, Biking, XC Skiing

Difficulty: Easy - Difficult

Directions: From I-68, take exit 22 and follow Chestnut Ridge Road south to its end. Take a left on New Germany Road and continue for .2 miles. Take a right on West Shale Road and continue approximately .7 miles to gate and parking area.

Kendall Trail

Description: This a short but lovely (out and back - 3 miles round trip) trail that runs along the Youghiogheny River upstream from Friendsville, MD. It follows a 1890s era railbed to an old logging community called Kendall (originally Krug).  Little remains of the town of Kendall but in its heyday this was this busy mining and lumber town was the southern terminus of the Confluence & Oakland Railroad and the beginning of the Krug Lumber Railroad that extended all the way to Swallow Falls 16 miles upstream. 

Use: Walkiing, Hiking, Leashed Pets

Difficulty: Easy

Directions: From McHenry, take 219 North to Route 42 toward Friendsville, MD. Follow Route 42 for approx. 7 miles. Take a right on First Avenue and a left on Oak Street.


Friendsville Town Trails

Description: This is a short fitness/walking trail along the town park which borders the Yough River.

Use: Walking

Difficulty: Easy

Directions: Heading west on I-68, take the exit for Friendsville, MD. Turn right on Maple Street. After crossing the Youghiogheny River, turn left on 2nd Avenue and cross Bear Creek. Take the first or second left and follow to the end. The trail runs along the river and around the athletic fields.

 

Little Meadow Lake Loop

Description: A one mile loop around a small lake. This privately owned area is good for birding and a quick, lovely walk.

Use: Walking

Difficulty: Easy

Directions: From I-68, take the Route 219 North exit. Turn south on Chestnut Ridge Road and proceed about .5 miles. Little Meadow Lake is on your left. Don't park in the grass;  pull offs and camp areas are nearby for parking.

Margraff Plantation (multiple trails)

Description: This trail features moderate to technical mountain biking including logs and other obstacles designed for mountain bikers. Trails are primarily single track through woods and open fields. Several loops are available here but there is currently no map at the trailhead.


Use: Mountain Biking, Hiking, Snowmobiling, Horseback Riding

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Directions: Following 219 North to the center of Accident, MD, take a right on Accident-Bittinger Road and continue for .8 miles. Take a left on Fratz Road (1/2 mile paved, road turns to dirt, 1/3 mile) followed by another left at end of Fratz Road. Parking is approximately 500 feet on the left and the trails are accessed across the road.

MeadowMountain (I68 to South of Frank Brennerman Road)

Description: This trail runs along the crest of Meadow Mountain following the Eastern Contental Divide in some areas. There are great views to both the east and west. There are plans to connect this trail with the Meadow Mountain Trail at Deep Creek Lake State Park.Use: Mountain Biking, Hiking, Horseback Riding, far northern section allows 4 wheelers & snowmobilesDifficulty: Easy - ModerateDirections to Multiple Trailheads:1) Northern Trailhead at East Shale Road. Take I68 exit for 219 N. Turn south (this is Chestnut Ridge Road); Take left between I68 ramp and gas station. Follow this for .8 miles. Last .2 miles 4WD recommended.
2) West Shale Trailhead. Follow Chestnut Ridge Road outh for 2.5 miles ""T"" intersection. Turn left on New Germany. Go .5 miles and trailhead is directly across from West Shale Road. Parking area on left just past trailhead.
3) Frank Brenneman Road which runs between 495 and New Germany Road. Take New Germany Road South from I-68; turn right (west) on Frank Brenneman Road; go approximately 1 mile to top of hill and look for trail. Parking is limited"

Mt. Aetna and Savage River Lodge Trails

1) outer loop trail (accessing mt. aetna trail, red oak trail, savage river trail and goat trail). This large loop takes you along the headwaters of the savage river and through beautiful forest. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound.
2) Bodhi's trail (accessing mud lick and wood cock trails and other connections)
If you plan to use the Lodge as a base, they charge $5 (with its wonderful covered porch in the summer and fire ring in the winter, we love it)

Travel .1 mile to “Y” intersection and bear left onto Frostburg Road. Continue 2.6 miles and turn right at our sign onto Mt. Aetna Road. Mt Aetna Road becomes a gravel road at the bottom of the first hill. The trailhead for the Outer Loop is at the bridge. Continue on the road to the Lodge for Bodhi's trail. "

Negro Mountain

Description: This is a loop trail that includes some steep slopes along power lines, some wet areas and some stream crossings.

Use: Mountain Biking, Hiking, Snowmobiling

Difficulty: Moderate - Difficult

Directions: From Accident, take Bowman Hill Road east from Route 219 and park right before Amish Road. 

2nd Option: From Route 495 north of Bittinger, take Dung Hill Road west.

New Germany State Park(multiple trails)

Description: Detailed trail maps are available at the Ranger Station across from New Germany Road and the park entrance. Trails are both road and single track trail. Trails range from steep old logging roads to level trail following Poplar Lick. Trail includes several bridge crossings.

Use: Hiking, Mountain Biking, Camping

Difficulty: Easy - Difficult

Directions: From I-68, take exit 22 and turn south on Chestnut Ridge Road. Follow it to the end and take a left on New Germany Road. Continue for 2 miles to the park entrance on the left. 

2nd Option: From Route 495, take New Germany Road approximately 7.5 miles to the park entrance (McAndrews Hill Road) on right. Follow McAndrews Hill approximately .5 miles to the lake area and trails parking.

Poplar Lick

Description: This trail follows a lovely native trout stream that flows into Savage River. There are numerous stream crossings. The area is subject to flooding. There is camping along the trail with permit, but the trail is closed during winter. This trail connects to New Germany State Park.  hiking and biking trails approximately .5 miles from the New Germany State Park trail head.

Use: Hiking, Biking

Difficulty: Moderate, Some Steep Sections

Directions: From Route 495 at Glendale Road, go north 1.5 miles. Take a right on New Germany Road. Go 6.2 miles to parking area on the right side.
